Early Pregnancy Scan (6-11 Weeks)

An Early Pregnancy Scan, also known as a Viability or Dating Scan, is an essential ultrasound performed between 6 and 11 weeks of pregnancy. This scan offers reassurance by confirming the pregnancy’s health and progress.

What the Early Pregnancy Scan Checks:

  • Pregnancy Confirmation: Verifies the presence of a gestational sac within the uterus.
  • Gestational Age & Due Date: Measures the embryo to estimate how far along you are and calculate your due date.
  • Heartbeat Detection: Detects the baby’s heartbeat, typically visible from around 6 weeks.
  • Number of Babies: Determines whether you are expecting a single baby, twins, or multiples.
  • Pregnancy Location: Confirms that the pregnancy is in the uterus and rules out ectopic pregnancy (where the embryo implants outside the uterus).
  • Uterus & Ovaries Evaluation: Checks for any fibroids, cysts, or abnormalities that may affect pregnancy.
  • Investigation of Bleeding or Pain: Helps identify the causes of any spotting, cramping, or discomfort during early pregnancy.

When to Have an Early Pregnancy Scan: This scan can be performed between 6 and 11 weeks of pregnancy. For the most accurate results, we recommend waiting until at least 7 weeks, when the heartbeat is more likely to be visible.

How the Scan is Performed:

  • Typically, the scan is transabdominal (performed over the tummy), but a transvaginal scan may be used in early pregnancy for clearer imaging.
  • The procedure is safe, painless, and non-invasive.
